This is our story

Some people were just born to do certain things

Whether swinging a bat, standing on a stage, or in my case, building and remodeling. As a young kid, my babysitter happened to be a piece of wood. My dad would give me a piece of wood, a box of nails, and a hammer and I would sit in the yard and just drive nails until I was left with either an empty nail box, or I smashed my finger and ran inside crying with either outcome leaving a smile on my dad’s face.

Providing home improvement estimates in 10 minutes or less was never part of the equation.

From an early age, I learned I loved two things. Building things and seeing people’s reaction when they were completed. It’s Funny how life sometimes brings you full circle. Now at 21 years of age, I had a family, a mortgage, and more bills than I would recommend for most 21-year old’s. It was time I supported a family which led me into the world of technology.

I tried to convince myself that building things on a computer was a lot like building things with wood. Unfortunately, this only lasted so long. One day, I needed some lawn bags for our house so I headed up to our local Home Depot. By accident, I parked at the wrong end of the store and entered directly into the lumber section. I found myself walking down an aisle smelling fresh cut wood which was a reminder to myself that I wasn’t doing something that I loved but something for a paycheck. (I know, I’m sick. Some people are drawn to smells of fresh donuts or pizza, I happened to be drawn to freshly cut cedar)

I thought I found a solution. I left my boring computer job and started with a local remodeling company providing outside sales to homeowners looking to remodel their home. Although, I wasn’t driving the nails, I was at least offering solutions allowing me to see the happy reactions on completed projects. In a very short period, I was given the keys to my own office and told, “keep selling”.

I am overstating the term “my own office” a bit because it sounds more impressive. Actually, it was actually a 450 sq. ft. room with a folding table, a phone, and a computer that may have been the first Mac built by Steve Jobs in 1976. But, we were off and running. My wife and I grew our little office from one room and a desk, to a 6,000 plus sq. ft. showroom with 8 individual offices, a lot of sales people, and countless installation crews.

During all this growth though something had changed.

I witnessed my little remodeling company grow into a nationally recognized sales organization. We were being recognized for Sales. (Sales) Not remodeling and certainly not for helping homeowners transform their home. At some point, our industry had become more about yesterday’s sales figures and less about today’s completed projects and I had followed suit. From manufacturers to sales gurus all over the internet, the focus seemed to be on “high pressure” and marketing gimmicks convincing you to “call today” for your free-estimate so we could employ high-pressure sales tactics. It’s a very old adage you’ve heard thousands of times but certainly still holds true. Nothing is free. Free Estimates by contractors are offered as a way to get a foot in the door to SELL you something today.

Think about the free vacation some of us once won. Forget about the fact it was sent to our company via fax and everyone in our office that called the number were lucky winners. I was also one of the oh-so lucky one's to win a 3 day stay at a great resort. All they required was for me to sit through their short time share presentation. As with your free contractor estimate, these companies bank on the fact that they will High-Pressure sell enough people to offset the free ones that don't buy. Like so many, you likely either left the presentation purchasing a time share you never expected to buy, or left the presentation so mad from the pressure being applied that you couldn’t even enjoy the free room they gave you for the weekend. (Luckily I was in the second category)

For me, it signaled the problem within our industry.

Something just felt wrong. The proudest moment I achieved was winning remodeler of the year which showcased our quality of workmanship. The turning point for me was being recognized as a top 10 retailer in the entire country based on sales volume. For many, this would signal a great achievement. For me, it signaled the problem within our industry. The more sales you make, the more sales people you have to hire, the more money you have to spend creating catchy marketing gimmicks asking customers to call for a free estimate for sales people to meet.

This leads to more employees you have to hire to handle the work flow from the deals turned in by your new sales people, the more unqualified installers you have to hire to complete all the new deals by the sales team given to the new employees hired to handle the additional work flow being installed by sometimes unqualified installers, I think you get the point. Our sales were growing at an enormous rate, but our customer service and quality of workmanship was wholeheartedly dropping. One thing was becoming clear, we either had to be a great re-modeler or a great sales organization. When your focus becomes sales volume and not customer service and quality installations, this can sometimes lead to hires of people you wouldn't normally consider bringing on board.

We grew to fast to quickly

Unfortunately, for us the focus remained on the latter. We grew so fast so quickly and the values set by my wife and I when we first opened were now non-existent. We could not change the foundation that I had allowed our business to become and so we made the decision to close our little office and it has become the best decision we ever made.

“How we are making home improvement shopping better”?

We learned so much so fast experiencing more in a 10-year window then many companies likely experience in a lifetime. So, my wife and I sat down and started with a blank piece of paper with one sentence written in front of us. “How can we make home improvement shopping better”?

Thanks to my background in technology and my extensive experience and love of remodeling, BallparkMe was born.
